What is Nitrox?

The air that we breath from a SCUBA tank is normally filled with compressed air. Air is composed of approximately 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. Nitrox is an enriched air mixture that consists of a higher percentage of oxygen than "regular" air. Typically Nitrox is provided in a 32% or 36 % mix, which means that the gas has 32% oxygen and 68% nitrogen or 36% oxygen and 64% nitrogen. These gas mixtures are also known as EAN32 and EAN36.

Why do I need Nitrox?

Since Nitrox consists of a higher percentage of oxygen, there is a lower percentage of nitrogen. This results in a lower nitrogen saturation while SCUBA diving. Lower nitrogen consumption can increase bottom times, reduce surface interval and/or reduce the risk of decompression sickness (the bends). The benefits can far outweigh the risks when diving within the limitations of sport diving depths of less than 130 feet.

Do I need special training to dive with Nitrox?

YES! In order to have your SCUBA tanks filled with Nitrox, you must present a certification card to an authorized Nitrox provider. This certification shows that you have been trained in the special precautions that must be taken when diving with Nitrox. Aqua Adventures can provide the required training. The training includes information on differences in bottom times, maximum depths, and equipment considerations.

Where do I get Nitrox?

Nitrox gas mixtures should only be purchased from a qualified Nitrox provider. Aqua Adventures in Frazer, PA has been certified by SSI (SCUBA Schools International) to provide Nitrox gas for use in SCUBA diving.

Will my equipment work with Nitrox?

YES! If your equipment has been properly maintained in the past and is in good working order, your SCUBA tanks and regulators can be prepped for use with Nitrox. Aqua Adventure is an authorized repair and maintenance facility, our technicians are qualified to service and prepare equipment, valves, regulators, and blending systems for use with Nitrox and oxygen.
